The Good Life

That's me above getting all pensive.

While on our way to Franklin, we made another side stop at the former home of Scott and Helen Nearing. Julie and I have read several of their books and consider them to be somewhat heros to us. Check out www.thegoodlife.org when you have some time. The pictures are of the house that they built...by hand...when Helen was in her 60's (she merely hauled the rocks that weighed 30-40 lbs) and Scott in his 80's (he mixed the concrete by hand with a shovel). There is a stone wall around the garden and the greenhouse is partially stone. They were amazing pioneers. The house is in Harborside, Maine on Cape Rosier. It overlooks Penobscot Bay ("Pen" Bay to Mainers) and is beautiful.

"The good life is never stable, never secure, never easy and never ended. It is a series of steps or stages, one leading into the other and all, in their outcome, adding, not subtracting; augmenting, not diminishing; building, not destroying; creating, not annihilating."

-Scott Nearing, 1965
